On 26 Nov 2024, Mr. Peeraphan Salirattaviphak, a Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Ministry of Energy said that the Ministry of Energy will announce a reduction in electricity bills from January to April down for another three satang per unit from 4.18 baht to 4.15 baht per unit, effective from January to April 2025 to help relieve the burden of living expenses and as a New Year’s gift for all Thai people.
After the end of the process of hearing opinions at the meeting of the Office of the Energy Regulatory Commission (OERC) has resolved to approve the review of the Fuel Adjustment charge (FT) and electricity bill for January to April 2025. It will be charged down to 4.15 baht per unit as a result of the revision of related figures and projections. The OERC will official announcement in the future.
According to the Energy News Center (ENC), OERC opened to listen to the opinions of the public opinion on the monthly electricity bill from January to April 2025, by considering electricity bills, divided into 3 ways as follows:
Case 1; the Ft is 170.71 satang per unit, including the base electricity bill of 3.78 baht per unit. The average electricity bill will be increased to 5.49 baht per unit. In this case, the debt will be reimbursed to EGAT at 85,236 million baht(or equivalent to 131.01 satangs per unit) including the gas spread for the electricity sector in 2023 or AFGAS of state-owned gas businesses (EGAT and PTT) at 15,083.79 million baht (or equivalent to 23.18 satang per unit) totaling 154.19 satangs per unit.
Case 2, the Ft is 147.53 satang per unit, including the base electricity bill of 3.78 baht per unit, thus increasing the average electricity bill to 5.26 baht per unit. The debt will be gradually repaid to EGAT at 85,236 million baht by April 2025.
Case 3; the Ft value is fixed equal to the current period (the EGAT proposal). which is equal to 39.72 baht per unit, when combined with the base electricity bill at 3.78, causing the the average electricity bill to be 4.18 baht per unit. In this case, the outstanding cost (AF) that can be accrual is 15.094 million baht (or 23.20 baht per unit) It is expected to be repaid at the end of April 2025. There will be an outstanding cost burden on EGAT and state enterprises that operate natural gas (EGAT and PTT. ) to bear the burden on behalf of the people remaining at 85,226 million baht.
Although electricity bills are cheaper, people still have to pay back electricity and PTT which used to help us pay our electricity bills in the past. The total outstanding debt is now over 85,226 million baht, which means that this reduction may only prolong the repayment.
