The announcement was signed by Police Major General Thawat Wongsangaล, Deputy Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, acting on behalf of the Metropolitan Police Commissioner and the Chief Traffic Officer in Bangkok.
Police Major General Thawat Wongsanga, deputy commissioner of the Metropolitan Police (traffic supervision), explained that the speed limit in Bangkok was originally set at no more than 50 kilometers per hour in the royal court area, but the new regulations added “Na Phra Lan Road” to this speed limit area.
Other roads in Bangkok that previously had a speed limit of not more than 80 kilometers per hour have now been reduced to not more than 60 kilometers per hour. The main reason is to reduce accidents and improve traffic discipline for road users, as Bangkok is one of the highest accident numbers cities in Asia.
Police Major General Thawat said the new regulation was jointly studied with related agencies before implementing it. The goal is to reduce road accidents, especially during festivals such as New Year’s or Songkran, where the traffic is not jammed, causing accidents to happen easily.
However, this regulation excludes 13 roads connecting the perimeter, which still allow no more than 80 kilometers per hour because they are still safe to operate. Expressways and elevated roads are still subject to regulatory speed limits.
In addition, motorcycles are subject to this new speed limit to ensure the safety of shared roads.
