New history! Thailand has an Equal Marriage law

Marriage Equality
January 23, 2025, is an important day in Thailand because the Equal Marriage Law went into effect. After a long wait, it allows people of all ages and identities to register their marriage equally, without discrimination or exclusion

To make it to this path, it was not easy. Back in 2012, there was news that same-sex couples in Chiang Mai were denied marriage registration. That was the beginning of the fight for equal rights. After that, a Civil Partnership Bill was proposed, but this bill still did not cover the rights same as a real marriage, so many people felt unfair. Until 2020, the Equal Marriage Law passed through both the House of Representatives and the Senate, making many people’s dreams come true.

On that day, many district offices nationwide were very active. Some couples registered so early in the morning and many couples were as impressive as those who had been together for decades who didn’t expect that they could be legally registered marriage. The other couple had already been registered the marriage abroad, but today, both said that it is more meaningful to register a marriage in Thailand because it represents pride in being Thai.

Equal marriage law not only validates love but also helps legal rights such as the right to take care of a spouse when sick, inheritance, or family-related transactions, and adoption rights. These used to be obstacles for same-sex couples in the past. When this law occurred, many people said it was not just marriage, but also reflects the progress of Thai society in accepting more diversity.

Mr. Karom Polpornklang, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office, said that the Department of Government Administration, Ministry of Interior, has prepared the concept “Marriage Equal to All Love 878 Districts across Thailand”. On the first day, there were as many as 1,754 LGBTQIAN+ couples registered for their marriage, which is considered the highest marriage registration in history.

Couples who wish to register their marriage can visit all district offices nationwide or Thai embassies and consulates abroad. The government is ready to facilitate every step of the way so that all couples can start their marriage in the most equal and happy manner.

This is only the first step, but we believe that in the future we will see more Thai society as an equal in all aspects. !
