According to the corporate data in the digital content business (30th May 2024) found that there were 1,071 cases with registered capital of 4,806 million baht, divided into the following categories:
The most are registered as companies, with 993 companies, or 92%, and registered capital of 4,211 million baht, followed by 74 partnerships/common partnerships of 61.46 million baht and 4 public companies with a capital of 535 million baht.
Foreign investments were valued at 834 million baht, divided into 272 million baht for animation/character, 422 million baht for games, and 139 million for e-books. The top three countries were Malaysia, 172 million baht, Japan, 146 million baht, and Hong Kong, 117 million baht.
The e-book business accounts for 48% of all digital content businesses. The e-book business has the best potential to generate revenue and profit. In 2023, the e-book business had a total industrial value of 3,971 million baht, mainly from domestic production and consumption, generating 3,162 million baht, a profit of 107 million baht.
The change in consumer behavior from print to digital and the closure of bookstores has resulted in people changing from reading books to reading through electronic tools because it is convenient to use, can be carried around, and has a variety of content that is easy to access.
“Oramon Sapthaweetham”, Director-General of the Department of Business Development, provides information about the digital content business in Thailand, although it does not look as lively as in foreign markets because there are still challenges in three areas:
The fuel for business growth, especially the employment of a skilled digital content creator, the cost of producing content, and the relatively high cost of equipment, make small businesses very inaccessible.
The lack of resources to develop skills domestically has led to creative people going abroad. Unfortunately, Thailand does not have a wide enough platform for talented people to show opportunities to create economic value at home.
Domestic consumption is low. For the most part, the Thai market is exporting.
The digital content business still has high growth opportunities. There are still many areas waiting for Thai investors to take over the current and future markets, especially government support for skill and technology development, as well as the “Thai Style” promotion for international recognition.
