How does Synchronized swimming become a sport in the Olympic Games?

Synchronized swimming is a sport combining swimming, dance, and artistic expression that mixes the beauty, harmony, and strength of athletes. In this article, ACU PAY will explore the history of synchronized swimming and why it became one of the competitive sports of the 2024 Olympics.

Before becoming a synchronized swimming sport

Synchronized swimming is based on water performances, which can go back hundreds of years. In the 19th century, performances in this form were presented in the United States and Europe, with actresses starting to act in beautifully harmonized gestures underwater, often performing at festivals or celebrations.

In the early 20th century, these performances began to be adapted and developed in a more formal way, and in 1900 synchronized swimming was introduced at the Olympics for the first time as a demonstration sport, with athletes performing postures that require synchronization in the water, along with musical rhythm which made the show a spectacular event and attracted audiences.

In the 1920s, synchronized swimming became more famous, and in 1939 synchronized swimming competitions were held in the United States. It quickly gained popularity. These events set the standard of training and organizing competitions, contributing to the international recognition of this sport.

Synchronized sports were officially recognized as one of the Olympic Games in 1984. Since then, synchronized swimming has been popular, and more diverse techniques have been developed over time. Athletes must use their abilities in swimming, dancing, and artistic expression.  The training is intensive and takes years of training to be able to be fully and simultaneously performed.

Synchronized swimming requires good body control, muscle strength, underwater breathing ability, and, more importantly, teamwork. Group training is very important, allowing athletes to learn to synchronize rhythms and create beautiful, harmonious performances.

Synchronized swimming has now become a popular sport for both amateurs and professionals. It is also popular among children and young people who want to develop muscle skills and opportunities in this area.

Therefore, synchronized swimming has developed into a sport that creates fun and challenges for athletes. It is also one of the sports that offers true water beauty and art both today and in the future. Of course, synchronized swimming will continue to grow and become popular to inspire a new generation of athletes to develop and perform while they are in the water in perfect harmony and beauty.
