Unlocking the Secret of the Immortal Jellyfish: The Longest-Lived Creature!

Jellyfish
You’ve probably heard the saying “Born, grow old, suffer, and die” something everyone must face. But did you know there’s a tiny creature in the sea that doesn’t have to worry about aging or death due to lifespan at all? That’s right, it’s the “Immortal Jellyfish” (Turritopsis dohrnii), which can reverse its age indefinitely! Recently, scientists have successfully decoded the genetic makeup of this immortal jellyfish, which could potentially bring humanity closer to understanding how to slow down aging and extend life in the future.

How Does the Immortal Jellyfish Do It?

Normally, jellyfish follow a life cycle like this: Egg > Larva (Planula) > Polyp (Polyp) > Adult Jellyfish (Medusa). When it’s time, they reproduce and die. But the Immortal Jellyfish is special because, once it reaches adulthood, it can reverse its age back to the polyp stage! Then, it can transform back into a new jellyfish, repeating this process in an endless loop without ever aging or dying. However, it can still die if eaten by other animals or succumbs to disease, it’s just not due to old age.

A team of researchers from Spain compared the Immortal Jellyfish to a closely related species, the Red Jellyfish (Turritopsis rubra), which cannot reverse its age. They found that the Immortal Jellyfish has a special ability to repair its DNA and better maintain its telomeres.

What Are Telomeres?

Telomeres are the protective caps at the end of chromosomes that help prevent DNA from deteriorating too quickly. In humans and other animals, telomeres shorten with age, leading to cell degeneration and aging. However, the Immortal Jellyfish is capable of maintaining the length of its telomeres, which prevents it from aging.

Don’t get any ideas about extracting this jellyfish for anti-aging creams just yet! Scientists say this research just helps us understand aging and lifespan better. It will take a long time before we can apply it to humans. Monty Graham, a jellyfish expert, said, “We can’t just take these jellyfish and make skin creams right away, but this research will open the door to interesting studies on aging in the future.”

While we may not be at the point of immortality like in sci-fi movies, this tiny jellyfish could hold the key to a longer, healthier life.
