High body temperature in dogs is a condition in which the body temperature rises above normal levels. Generally, the body temperature of dogs is around 103 degrees Fahrenheit or about 39 degrees Celsius, which does not occur from fever. It is often caused by dogs staying in high temperatures for long periods. dehydration, especially in places that are dense and above 41 degrees Celsius, can easily lead to heat stroke which is very dangerous because many organs fail, including death.

Dogs and cats usually have sweat glands at the soles of their feet and nose. Cooling the heat down mainly relies on breathing and panting. If the bodies of these animals cannot cool down in time, heat stroke can occur.

What are the symptoms of Heat Stroke in dogs?

Early recognition or observation of symptoms can help alleviate the severity of the disease. The symptoms of heat stroke in dogs are as follows:

  • Heavy gasping and difficulty breathing It is often the first sign of heat stroke in dogs. If you find your dog panting heavily or breathing faster than usual, you should keep a close eye on it.
  • Unusually high amount of saliva that becomes more sticky It is normal for dogs to drool, but if it is too much, it is a worrisome symptom.
  • Sleepy and drowsy If a dog’s behavior changes, or looks tired or drowsy, this can be a warning sign of health problems.
  • Lose consciousness or vomit These symptoms are severe and should be treated immediately.
  • The color of the gums changed The gums should be pinkish red, and if pale or dark, it means the dog may be sick.

Initial Heat Stroke First Aid Method

The important thing about first aid for pets that are suffering from heat stroke is to lower their body temperature, but do not reduce it too quickly because it may be dangerous. The advice from veterinarians are as follows:

  1. If our pets are in hot weather or crowded places, they should be brought out to areas where the air flows, release the leash and take the dog’s clothing off to facilitate breathing and help cool off the heat.
  2. Use a damp cloth to wipe the area such as the armpits, groin, or under the sole of the feet to help cool down. Be careful not to use too cold water because it may cause shock. It is best to use water at room temperature.
  3. Massage the leg to stimulate the circulatory system. When first aid is done, pets should be rushed to the hospital so that veterinarians can conduct thorough diagnostic and treatment.

Heat stroke in pets is a concern of animal lovers because in summer like this, the dog, the cat, or the fluffy pet may feel hotter than humans like us because they are covered by hair which makes it easy to heat until heat stroke occurs.

No matter what, this summer, we should pay a lot of attention to our dogs and pets. Monitor the symptoms and avoid crowded places or places that cause puppies to overheat so that they don’t get heat stroke.
