How to check if your sim card matches your mobile banking before being suspended, starting 27 May 2024

Currently, the opening of mule accounts and mule SIM is highly widespread. The method of this fraud is to open a bank account using only a mobile phone number and a SIM card that does not match the name of the bank account or a way to launder money. Currently, the government has introduced new policies and measures forcing the name Mobile Banking and SIM to be the same name.

To prevent various forms of crime, if any of the accounts have different names, the account owner must register with the service center to update the names so that mobile banking can be used as usual.

According to the inspection in Thailand, there are 106 million mobile banking accounts and about 30 million accounts with different names. The government’s goal is to close the mule account to about 100,000 accounts per month.

Since May 27, 2024, the inspection of the mule account and mule SIM has been initiated by the owner of the account to change the SIM card that has the name of the old account owner. However, exceptions may be made in some cases when opening an account for children or elderly parents, but there must be processing with the bank, otherwise, the account may be suspended.

If you request to activate mobile banking in a new account, the bank will check the account owner and SIM card owner, which must be the same person and the same name. Currently, the government has developed a system to check the mule accounts and mule sims. There are two ways as follows:

  1. Users must dial an automatic number by dialing *179*, followed by a 13-digit ID number, dialing #, and dialing out. If matched, you will receive a text message that the ID number matches the SIM number.
  2. The three-tier application. Users can download the app on their phones and check how many mobile phone numbers they have registered, you can report strange numbers, including locking and unlocking newly registered numbers, and you can check whether phone numbers registered with mobile banking and SIM card numbers match or not.

In this regard, the NBTC has implemented the policy as soon as possible to reduce illegal activities and criminals. Mobile banking of any account user is unable to operate, possibly because the registered phone number and SIM card do not match. It can be operated at banks and operating points. However, in some cases, such as opening accounts for children and the elderly will be at the discretion of the bank to consider exceptions.
