What is the significance of Labor Day?

It is undeniable that labor has played an integral role in driving the economy. Every worker knows that the first of May of every year is Labor Day and a holiday. This day will remind you of the importance of labor. Today we have some information about how the importance of Labor day is. 

The beginning of Labor Day

The world has become an industrial world since 130 years ago. The entrepreneur used machine and human labor without welfare or clear deal between employer and employee. 

Until 1889, labor in the U.S. demanded a limit of working hours to 8 hours a day, including reviewing other workers’ rights as appropriate, it became a rally in Haymarket Square.

The clash between labor and police caused injury and death for both sides. People all over the world praised the courage of that negotiation between the labor movement and the state by designating May 1 of every year as International Labor Day.

The clash between labor and police happened in many countries to negotiate for fair employment. Also, providing appropriate welfare for safety and health for labor while working. These followings are the countries that has May 1st as their national holiday; The U.S.A., China, German, Denmark, Bulgaria, France, Netherland, Italy, Greece, India, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Laos and Thailand. 

European people consider Mayday as the beginning of the agricultural season to be a sacrificial day in order to have a good harvest while Thailand has Royal Ploughing Ceremony Day which is a good day to start the agricultural season.

History of Thailand's Labor Day

Thailand’s Labor Day started in 1932 which had Field Marshal P. Phibunsongkhram’s time as Prime Minister in Rama 8 Reign. The government approved May 1 as Laborers Day in 1956 and changed its name to Labor Day in 1957.

In the first period, labor was not allowed to take a day off on 1 May and this continued for 17 years until the announcement of a holiday for workers to have a celebration of Labor Day in 1974.

Since there is a Royal Ploughing Ceremony Day as a holiday following the Labor Day, labor who are in a farmer family took this opportunity to return to their hometown to start the sowing season. It is considered an auspicious time to plant crops waiting for rain during May-June.

The latest numbers of Thai laborers from the labor situation in the fourth quarter of 2022 are as follows:

  • In Thailand, 40.14 million people aged 15 and over are in the workforce.
  • 39.59 million are employed
  • 0.46 million are unemployed or 1.2 percent unemployment rate.
  • 0.09 million people are waiting for the hiring season.

The importance of Thai labor at present

Labor of both employees and personnel groups is the force driving the business and helps in generating income. This is an important factor in the production of goods and services. The following are the numbers of labor in various businesses:

It can be divided into the Department of Employment, the Department of Skill Development, the Department of Labour Welfare and Protection, and the Office of Social Security.
