Edinburgh Castle, Scotland

Edinburgh Castle is one of the most scary castles in the world, ranked by the Times. This castle was built in the 12th century, located on a rocky cliff and surrounded by a breathtaking view of Scotland. However, no one knew that inside the castle, there were prisons and buried graves of people who died from the pandemic around the castle.

The most well-known scary legend is the headless drummer. Tourists often heard the creepy drum noise echo throughout the rooms. There is also a legend of Lady Glamis that was burned alive in front of the eyes of her son in 1537 for a charge of being a witch. Her spirit is still around, demanding for justice that she deserves. Tourists usually see a little girl spirit wearing a blue dress and wandering around in the castle’s hall.

In 2001, there was an experiment conducted by inviting 240 volunteers who had never been to Edinburgh Castle and never heard of the history of this castle to live in the castle for 10 days. As a result, every participant experienced supernatural events and felt uncomfortable as if they were watched all the time. Also, they saw shadows appear in the prison cells and a feeling of being burnt for unknown reasons.

Leap Castle, Ireland

Leap Castle is known to be the most frightening castle in Ireland. It is assumed that this castle was built during the 13 century to 15 century, located in a rural area in Coolderry by the O’Bannon. Later, it was discovered that the castle was filled with many dark sides, whether an underground prison cell or trap doors that can be opened and closed with pointed iron bars waiting for the unfortunate victim to fall in. Moreover, 150 human skeletons have also been discovered. Due to these horrible discoveries, Leap became one of the most creepy castles in the world.

There were a lot of terrible events that happened here. One of them is similar to the Red Wedding Scene in Game of Thrones. According to the history record, during that time, a usurpation took place in the O’Carroll family, mercenaries were hired to help fight competitors in the power struggle. Upon their victory, they invited 40 mercenaries to celebrate the castle, all drinking and enjoying themselves. However, it was too late for those mercenaries to realize that they were poisoned. This massacre happened because the O’Carroll did not want to pay as agreed. Therefore, this place was called ‘Bloody Chapel’

Bhangarh Fort, India

Deep in Rajasthan at the foot of the Aravali Mountains, there is an abandoned 17th-century fortress town, built by Bhaawant Das as a present to the son of Madho Singh. At that time, the fortress was filled with busy residents but was eventually abandoned. This is what led many people to believe that the fortress was cursed.

Legend has it that there was a Brahmin who lived on the nearest mountain that allowed the fort to be built under the condition that it must not obscure the place of prayer to the sacred, making it blessed with protection. However, the son was neglected in this contract. He set his sights on building the fortress after his father died till the fortress blocked the sunlight. This made the blessing transform into a curse eventually.

This is considered the most haunted place in India. This tourist attraction is believed to be strictly forbidden to enter after sunset. Villagers in the neighborhood shared supernatural phenomena, including screams, crying, laughing, and sometimes music. People with bad luck may also be attacked by the invisible things in the fort.

Himeji Castle, Japan

Himeji Castle is 600 years old. It is the most beautiful castle fortress in Japan. This castle was built in the 1400s, it is a strategic point to protect the west of Kyoto with more than 80 buildings connected by a maze of winding paths. Himeji Castle is currently registered as Japan’s national treasure and a World Heritage Site. Apart from beauty, this castle also has the horror tragedy of Japan’s famous ghost story. which is “Plate-counting ghost” Sarayashiki or “Okiku”

The story says that Okiku is a samurai’s maid named Aoyama. With the beautiful look of Okiku, he fell in love and wanted to have her as his concubine. He then planned to bring a set of 10 expensive foreign dishes to Okiku for her to take care of. One day, he hid one dish and ordered Okiku to bring all 10 dishes to him. When Okiku couldn’t find them all, Aoyama accused her of having a bad job and being unable to take care of important things and offered that if she agreed to be his concubine, he would forgive her.

Okiku chose to maintain her honor so she turned down the offer and then jumped into a well to end her life. Some say Aoyama was very angry at her for refusing his offer, so he killed her and threw the body into the well. After Okiku’s death, there was a slow sound of counting dishes around the well to the 9th dish and crying every night until Aoyama finally lost his mind and went crazy.

Kellie's Castle, Malaysia

The old European castle, which was formerly a residence of Scottish owners, was built in a complicated manner. There are many secret chambers and corridors similar to the Winchester Haunted House in America. The castle was built in 1910 by William Kellie-Smith to give as a gift to his wife.

However, before it was finished, the owner suddenly passed away in 1926. His wife was very grieved and fled to Malaysia, and eventually, the construction was halted and desolate. Although the castle is a popular tourist destination in Malaysia, people often hear screaming and loud shutters at night when no one is around or even see Kellie-Smith’s soul and his long-dead daughter in her room.
