How to take  birth-control pill correctly

How many types of birth-control pills are there, and what are each type of it?

There are 3 types of birth control pills as follow;

  • Combined oral contraceptive pills: It contains estrogen and progestin hormones combined in a single pill. It is a commonly used birth-control pill and has a relatively high anti-pregnancy effect. It also causes menstruation to come on time every month that you take the pills.
  • Progestin-only contraceptive pills: It is suitable for mothers who are lactating and also reduces side effects more than the combined oral contraceptive pills.
  • emergency contraceptive pills: It is a birth-control pill with 1 to 2 tablets and will be taken in case of condom leakage while having sex.

How to take birth-control pill

In the case of simple contraceptives such as combined hormone and normal hormone, there are two forms of contraceptives: 21 pills and 28 pills.

  • 21 pills: You should eat during the first five days of your monthly period. After that, you can eat until the panel is complete following the arrows. If you finish eating the first panel, space for 7 days and start eating a new panel immediately.
  • 28 pills: You should eat during the first five days of your monthly period. After that, you can eat until the panel is complete following the arrows. If you finish eating the first panel, you can start eating a new panel immediately without spacing time for 7 days. The first 21 pills will contain hormones and the last seven will be placebo, suitable for people who have missed counting their days or forgot to take the pills.

Emergency contraceptives should be taken immediately or within 72 hours of unintended sexual intercourse or if a condom is leaked. Emergency contraceptives are available as one tablet and two tablets.

  • The one-tablet emergency contraceptive pill should be taken after having unintended sex or in case of condom leakage immediately or within 72 hours.
  • For the two-tablet emergency contraceptives, the first tablet should be taken after unintentional sexual intercourse or if a condom is leaked, the first pill should be taken immediately or within 72 hours and the second tablet should be taken again 12 hours later.

What to do when forgetting to take birth control pills?

  • If you forget to take one contraceptive pill, take it as soon as you remember. It means that you have to take two pills in total that day: the forgotten pills and the ones you need to eat that day.
  • If you forget to take two contraceptive pills, it is recommended to take the most recent pills as soon as you can remember. For example, today is Wednesday but you forget to take the Monday and Tuesday pills, it is recommended to take the Tuesday pills as soon as you remember, including Wednesday at the same time, and skip the Monday pill.
  • If you forget to take three contraceptives, stop taking that panel immediately and start the new panel on the first day of menstruation next time. Meanwhile, abstain from sex or prevent contraception in other ways.
