Which types of sign must be paid for taxes? Things an entrepreneur should know

Any entrepreneur who is going to open a restaurant, clothing store, cafe, or doing business with signs on their front door to promote or advertise. One thing that is important and should not be greatly ignored is to pay for the “Signboard Tax” What’s the Signboard Tax and what are the criteria?

What is Signboard Tax?

A signboard tax is a tax levied on signs that are store names, brands, trademarks, or commercial advertising to make money, such as signs that are often put up on buildings or large billboards that are often seen when we drive on expressways. Each sign may be displayed in the form of letters, images, marks written, engraved on materials, etc. There are also tax-exempt signs.

How to calculate the signboard tax

The signboard tax amount = the unit of a sign * signboard tax rate

Tax rate for each types of sign

Type 1 A sign with all Thai Alphabets

  • (a) Signs with moving or changing text, at the rate of 10 baht per 500 square centimeters;
  • (b) Signs other than (a) shall be charged at the rate of 5 baht per 500 square centimeters.

For example, a sign with the message:

Type 2 Signs with Thai characters in combination with foreign characters /pictures /marks

  • (a) A sign with text, mark, or moving image or change to text, mark, or other image at the rate of 52 baht per 500 square centimeters;
  • (b) signs other than (a) the rate of 26 baht per 500 square centimeters.

For example, a sign with the message:

เอซียู เพย์

Type 3 Signs without Thai characters, regardless of the image or mark, and signs with some or all Thai characters under or below foreign characters.

  • (a) A sign with text, mark, or moving image or change to text, mark, or other image at the rate of 52 baht per 500 square centimeters;
  • (b) signs other than (a) the rate of 50 baht per 500 square centimeters.

For example, a sign with the message:

When to pay for Signboard Tax?

  • The owner or holder of the sign shall submit a manifest for tax payment purposes (Phor Pน. 1) by March 31st of every year.
  • If a new sign is installed or the text in the sign is changed, it must be submitted as Phor Po 1 Within 15 days from the date of reinstallation or change of text
  • If the owner of the sign receives a tax assessment notice (Phor Po 3) Tax payment shall be made within 15 days from receipt of the notice of assessment.

Laws and Penalty

  • If entrepreneurs intend not to file tax returns, they will be fined between 5,000 and 50,000 baht.
  • If entrepreneurs report false messages or avoid paying taxes, they will face up to one year in prison or a fine of 5,000 – 50,000 baht or both.
  • If the receiving of the sign is not reported or does not file a signboard tax return, a fine of 1,000 baht – 10,000 baht will be imposed.

What kind of sign is "tax free"?

However, there are also signs in many places and features that are not subject to taxation as follows.

  • Signs that sticks in a building
  • Signs with sliding wheels (must be moved in and out)
  • Signs for occasional events.
  • Government signs
  • State and private school signs
  • Foundation, Association, and Temple signs
  • Signs attached to or displayed on personal cars, motorcycles, road grinders, or tractors.
