Update New Traffic Laws of 2024

The latest traffic law of 2024 was enacted on September 5, 2024. It has been announced through the Land Traffic Act (No. 13) 2024, which identified the adjustment of fines for traffic violations, speeding, drunk driving, forgetting to carry a driver’s license and many more rules. Each wrong-doing has a fine rate as follows:

1. Driving faster than the legal limit

In case of speeding exceeding the law limit, a maximum penalty of up to 4,000 baht will be imposed from the previous 1,000 baht.

2. Drunk driving

For those who are drunk drivers or have an alcohol content in  blood measured of more than 50 milligrams percent while driving, fines, and imprisonment are divided into 2 cases as follows:

  • First-time offenders: The fine is between 5,000 – 20,000 baht or up to one year in prison or both.
  • Drunk driving, repeating the same mistake within two years: The fine is between 50,000 – 100,000 baht or up to 2 years in prison or both.

 

3.Wrong-way driving

In case of wrong-way driving, drivers will impose fines of up to 2,000 baht from the previous fine of 500 baht.

4. Red light running

If a driver violates the traffic light signal, also known as the Red light running, the driver will be fined up to 4,000 baht from the previous fine of 1,000 baht.

5. Using the phone while driving

If drivers use their mobile phones while driving, they will be fined up to 4,000 baht from the previous fine of 2,000 baht. To ensure the safety of drivers and other pedestrians on the road, accessories should be used if the driver needs to use mobile phones such as earphones, wireless headphones, or accessories used in attaching phones to the front of the car.

6. No driver's license or the driver's license has expired

The penalty for not carrying a driver’s license or driver’s license expires will be divided into two cases. 

  • Case 1: In case 1 does not carry a driver’s license and gets pulled over, the driver will impose a fine of up to 1,000 baht or imprisonment for up to one month or both.
  • Case 2: In case a driver’s license expires, is revoked, or is confiscated but the driver is still driving on the road, the driver will impose a fine of not more than 2,000 baht.

7.Not stopping the car for people to cross at the crosswalk

If the driver does not stop the car at the crosswalk, the driver will be fined up to 4,000 baht from the previous fine of 1,000 baht.

8. Not wearing a helmet

Drivers and passengers who do not wear helmets will be fined up to 2,000 baht from the previous fine of 500 baht.

9. Not fastening the seat belt

Drivers and passengers who do not fasten their seat belts will be fined up to 2,000 baht from the previous fine of 500 baht.

10. Safety seats for children under 6 years old

If there is a child under 6 years old in the vehicle, the children will be required to sit on a safety seat or Car Seat. If not, the driver will be fined up to 2,000 baht.

11.Car race in public

Another problem that has plagued car and road users. Recently, penalties have been imposed on those racing in the following ways:

  • In the case people who have gathered and persuaded to race cars for 5 or more cars, including the following behavior will be considered guilty of attempting to race which are the modification of the cars used for racing illegally, an appointment in advance for racing, and a demonstration of a behavior that shows car racing. The drivers are guilty of two-thirds of the road race with fines ranging from 5,000 – 10,000 baht or up to 3 months in prison or both.
  • In the case of being an announcer or persuader, a fine of 10,000 – 20,000 baht or up to 6 months imprisonment or both.
  • The shop that helped decorate the car will be considered guilty as a sponsor, with a two-thirds penalty for road racing, with fines ranging from 5,000 – 10,000 baht or up to 3 months in prison, or both.

In addition to the mentioned traffic laws, many restrictions such as the regulations on expressways that allow motorcycles to run on expressways, four-wheelers have been set at speeds of 100 kilometers per hour, children under 7 years old are not allowed to sit at the front seat, and so on.

Moreover, there will also be several ways to pay fines including bank applications, ATMs, and the Department of Land Transport’s counters.

The purpose of the new 2024 traffic violation rate adjustment is to ensure that all road users follow the traffic rules with seriousness and increase road safety. Maintaining discipline in driving without breaking traffic laws is easier than paying fines many times, therefore, driving carefully for the safety of life and property.
